Why eat violet fruits and veggies is the second to last of our Eat the Rainbow series. If you made this far, you’re awesome! So I am a little biased since purple, or violet in this case, is my favorite color!!
In this post, we will learn why it is important to eat violet foods, what healthy nuggets they provide us, and some yummy recipes to help us eat them. It’s a lot easier to eat things that are good for us if they taste good.
What do Violet Fruits and Veggies help with?
Similarly to blue (indigo) fruits and veggies, violet fruits and veggies are also “rare” as in there are not a lot in this color that are naturally occurring. Even though there are not that many violet fruits and veggies, it doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t eat them. When you eat violet fruits and veggies, they are helping to protect your cells from damage, boosting your memory, and helping to fight inflammation.
What do Violet Fruits and Veggies contain?
Again, just as like blue (indigo) fruits and veggies, violet fruits and veggies are also high in antioxidants and Vitamin B.
What are some Violet Fruits and Veggies?
Even though there are not a lot of violet fruits and veggies, some are readily available in most grocery stores, like egg plant. While some of the other options, like purple peppers, might be a little bit harder to come buy. Some examples are:
- egg plant
- purple kohlrabi
- red onions
- purple potatoes
- purple cabbage
- purple peppers
- purple cauliflower
- purple asparagus
I think the most widely used item from this list is probably red onions. They just happen to be my husbands favorite onion so it’s what we normally have on hand.
One of my daughter’s favorites is purple cauliflower. The first time we saw it in the store, she “had” to try it. She was young, but I didn’t complain – I mean, she wanted to try a new veggie!!
On a total side note, I totally tried growing purple peppers this past year, I wasn’t as successful as I would like and am totally trying again, lol. Like I said, it’s my favorite color and we love peppers!
Eat Violet Fruits and Veggies Recipes
Now if you are going to eat violet fruits and veggies, it might be helpful to have some yummy recipes to make it a bit easier if these fruits and veggies aren’t your favorite.
Easy Breakfast Option
For breakfast, we are going to have cake!!! Hazah!!! No, I’m for real, this Breakfast Cake Bowl is truly filling and tasty. You will need to modify the fruit to fit our color, but you could totally use blackberries, plums, and figs and it would be amazing!
Easy Lunch Option
I love a quick and easy meal and this Quick Moussaka pretty much hits the spot since it is quick and easy! The star of this dish is egg plant, but you can also use red onion and purple carrots as well to get more of the violet color.
Easy Dinner Option
For dinner, Epicure’s Sweet Garlic Shrimp Stir-Fry is totally drool worthy! The recipe calls for red cabbage which is a great stir-fry veggie, but I would also add some purple asparagus (when in season) in lieu of the broccolini (which I love, but you know, we are talking about violet foods so why not).
Bonus – Easy Dessert Recipe
I know I mentioned this one before, but it deserves another shoutout, Grilled Stone Fruit. I’m not sure if you have ever grilled fruit, but it is pretty tasty and I highly recommend if you haven’t. For this recipe, I would recommend using only plums to keep with our violet theme.
